OfflineI inherited this from my great grandfather. He passed when I was 8. My grandfather kept it in a closet until he passed and I received this 97, that my grandfather referred to as “an old 12 gauge” and his 410. Which is a Steven’s single shot that was used so much if you breathe on the trigger it goes off.
This 97 has a rotten aftermarket recoil pad and some sort of gem in the stock. It functions well. I dove hunted with it a little after I first got it. Since I was cleaning up a couple other Winchesters I just got, I thought I’d pull this one out and share it. It was my first Winchester.
I looked up the sn when I got it, if I remember correctly it’s a 1925. I’m sure Burt will correct me if I’m wrong.
I’m guessing my great grandfather was a terrific trap shooter, and needed to bedazzle his shotgun. I”ll leave the gem, if anyone knows what it is or has a guess, please let me know. I’d like to put the correct but plate back on it or a correct recoil pad. What options are out there?
thanks for the help,
Adam

OfflineWhat is the serial number?
The butt stock was cut (shortened) for the recoil pad. The LOP for the Standard (Field) grade guns was 13 ⅞”
In your shoes, I would clean up the end of the butt stock, and then install a reproduction Winchester solid red rubber pad – Galazan Winchester Pre-64 Grind to Fit Recoil Pad (midwayusa.com)

Adam,
Your coworker appears to be ignorant of the facts. Simply type “Winchester Model 1897 take down adjustment” into your favorite search engine… you will find gobs of useful information.

Thanks again Burt, I know Mark Douglas has a video on it, but he didn’t do a 97 that I remembered. Wanted to ask y’all since I had a convenient thread
