Hello All,
I’ve learned a lot already, scanning old posts, but I only own one Winchester (sorry), but I’ve had it for about 30 years. It is a Model 1897, and while not a trench gun by any means, seems like a longer magazine tube that normal. It was suggested in the shop I bought it at that it could have been a police or prison gun, but there are no stamps anywhere for a Department or Institution. The details are:
-Blue Steel and walnut (probably) wood
-Model 1897 and Winchester, Trade Mark, stamped on the pump action bar
-Detailed info on Patents etc on the top of the barrel in small script
-Barrel marked with a 12 and probably a Win logo, CYL also
-Semi-pistol grip wallet stock with probably a hard rubber buttplate w/Winchester Repeating Arms logo and two screws. Pump grip is slotted walnut
-SN D 3286XX
The gun has see honest use, but functions fine, is tight, no pitting (though wear on barrel from either a rack or such). Wood is in good shape, not faded or major dings.
I’d appreciate any info on date of manufacture, possible type (e.g. field gun, LE special, etc). Any info on how scarce or common they are. A guesstimate on relative value (I know, tough to see without pics, which as a guest I can’t post, but can email).
Thanks in advance,
Phil
Phil,
You did not tell how long the barrel is, or how many 2-3/4″ shells it will hold in the magazine tube. Please send pictures to me at [email protected] and include the complete serial number.

May be your only Winchester but it sounds like a good one, no apologies necessary.

Sounds like a guard or riot gun. These have a 20″ barrel. Could be a take down barrel or a solid frame. Like Bert said need a barrel length and the full serial number without the XX’s. These guns aren’t always marked with a police or prison markings. Bert will know what you want.
Phil,
The Model 1897 Riot Gun magazines were made to hold (5) shells with (1) in the chamber for a total of (6). It had the same length magazine as all other variations except the Brush Gun, which only held (4) in the magazine.
