Fellow Collectors,

After looking at a number of possibilities and hearing the opinions of other members, I just purchased a 1925 vintage Model 12 in 12 gauge with 30 inch, solid rib, nickel steel barrel choked full.  The serial number is 407153.  It is in very good, unmolested condition.  How rare were solid ribbed models?  From what I have read, all Model 12, 12 gauge shotguns were chambered for 2 3/4 ” shells despite the barrel not being marked as such.  Is that correct?

Thank you,

Foxdoublegunner

Solid Rib Model 12 shotguns are not rare, but they are much less common than the plain non-ribbed barrels.  Serial number 407153 was manufactured in the year 1924 (mid year).  Yes, all 12-ga Model 1912/12 shotguns were chambered for a 2¾” shell unless otherwise marked.

Don’t shoot steel through it.  If you do you will probably ring the barrel at some point.  My Dad did it to his 1950’s Browning A5.

Chuck,

Thank you.  I have only lead shot in my ammo stores.  My only other shotgun is a vintage 1911 AH Fox doublegun which would not handle steel shot very well.

As a hunter we have to use steel for waterfowl everywhere that I know of.  Now in many states they are outlawing lead for all shooting.  Other materials are out there but usually more expensive and quite a few are not as effective.  That is another of the big negatives of wanting to use your old shotguns to hunt with.
