Hey guy’s just picked up a 1897 in 16GA $300 seemed like a honest price for a fun shooter and field use gun. She shows honest wear for its age, but not abused. I have plans too use it for clay birds for fun and Pheasant and Grouse when the season comes around. Anyway the 28in barrel has got too go thinking about 20in or 22in for a faster swing.
The chamber is cut for 2 1/2 shells as it was made originally in 1906 and will thus need be reamed for today’s 2 3/4 shells, does anyone see any issues with that? Its a shooter not a collectors peace so I’m not worried about wrecking a piece of history, just making my own..
I was reading somewhere and I don’t know if the info is correct or not, so I will ask it anyway. Can or does the front end from a 12GA swap onto the receiver and thus become a 2 gage set? Does the 16GA have/share the same breach face and extractor as the 12GA?
Hoping Bert see’s this and chimes in, I’m down the road in Silverdale Wa.
Phil,
The chamber is actually 2.5625 (2 9/16″).
You cannot swap barrel assemblies from a 16 gauge to a 12 gauge (or vice versa) as they are different size frames.
If you cut the barrel, I suggest starting at 26-inches, then progressively shorten it from there. Winchester manufactured what the cataloged as a “Brush Gun” with a 26-inch CYL bore barrel.

Phil,
Boerners I assume. What you are looking for is a Magazine Locking Pin. Get in touch with these folks – http://www.gun-parts.com/winchestershotgun/
