Very nice gun!  I could not resist placing a bid on it.

Nice gun in a hard to find configuration.  Usually these got used up.  It did sit on something wet for awhile.  Wood has turned black and the buttplate has some rust.

I happened to spot this one this morning.  I’m not much of a shotgun guy but I was quite struck by the condition and rarity.  I was not surprised when I found it was being discussed here.  Mark has nice stuff and they usually all go very (very) high.

Steve,

Winchester manufactured a total of (644) Model 1893 Riot Guns, with a fair number of them sold & shipped to the U.S. Express company.  Original Model 1893 Riot Guns are very hard to find today, especially with decent condition.

Thanks, Bert.  I knew they were hard to find but didn’t know they made so few.

The number of surviving specimens must be very small.  Between getting used up and lost to time, as well as surely many original owners sent them in when Winchester offered an even exchange for a brand new M1897, I can see finding one, let alone with condition, is quite the rare event.

Steve,

That is an “urban myth” about the number of Model 1893 shotguns that were returned and exchanged for a Model 1897.  The factory ledger records do not support that “theory”.  For a more detailed explanation, I recommend reading the article I wrote about this subject, published in the Spring 2017 Collector magazine.

You are correct that finding any Model 1893 shotgun is a rare event.

Bert –

Thanks for the clarification and recommendation.  I suppose once something appears in print, it can repeated over and over.
