I need help in identifying the model of the above Winchester shotgun, by its serial number if possible.
The guns was requisitioned by the Ministry of Supply from Purdey & Co in London in October 1941. Thanks.

Are you sure that the serial number is “A1640” ? If it actually has one more digit, it could be a Model 1893 e.g. “A16400”

Hi bert
This is the serial number info that I have at this stage. it was taken from a hand written Day Book. I will check with the Purdey Gun Room Manager whom I am dealing with, and get further clarification. However, I suspect that this is the number written in the Day Book.
I was hoping the A prefix would indicate the model of shotgun…

The “A” prefix does help identify it, but the “A” series Model 1893 Slide-action Shotguns were all manufactured in the 13300 – 24500 serial number range.
Do they have any pictures of the gun?
