I retired effective yesterday and one of my most exciting retirement projects is to fire (and clean) almost every firearm I own, modern and collectible, within the first year. So far I haven’t fired a shot or swabbed a bore but weather permitting I’ll cross a few off this weekend. Looks like a few 1892’s, an 1890 and a modern riot gun will see some action this weekend. I’m glad I thinned the herd a bit earlier this year and quite honestly there are a few I hope to sell before the year is up so I won’t have to shoot them.
Wish me luck…and if you’re not too busy drop by for a visit. Bring ear muffs and patches!

Congratulations on the recent retirement, Mike!

I retired (for the second time) in February 2023, and had the same thought about digging into the safe. So far, all I’ve accomplished is to get my reloading gear in order and load for most of the rifles in the safe.

There doesn’t seem to be as much ‘free time’ as I expected in retirement. Right now, I’m needing to kill weeds, fertilize the lawn, energize the sprinkler system, change the oil in the mowers, replace the battery in the ATV, etc, etc.  One of my old friends commented on retirement ‘How did I find time to do all this while I was working?’

But before all that, I’m going to smoke some ribs and a brisket (Shiner Bock is involved).Wink

Thanks, Paul!
Yard work off the table for next several days, yard is mostly underwater due to recent heavy rains and even though I have a 4WD Kubota trying to mow down the weeds will have to wait. Tonight I’m going to a local winery to hear my friend Dave Alexander play his guitar and sing some classic country music. He was a touring musician with Frank Sinatra, George Strait, Asleep at the Wheel and a few others. I’ll drop by the local meat market to see if they have any ideas but my smoker was destroyed by a storm last spring so I’ll be cooking indoors…unless I somehow score a new smoker. Wink

Retired cop & very good friend of mine with no particular health problems except moderate hypertension like most his age, “only” 60, talking with his wife at his kitchen table, suddenly slumped his head on the table.  Pronounced dead from a coronary after EMTs arrived within less than 10 min.  A prolific meat eater.

It was about time!  As you know, I retired (for the 2nd time) in October 2022, and I have not regretted it one iota!!!  Like Paul, I had plans for a lot of projects, but have only done some reloading.  I am planning to do some serious shooting and a little bit of load development later this Spring & Summer.

Thanks, Jim. In the interests of full disclosure I retired from my regular job, I still operate my “retirement business” because I knew several years ago I’d need something to keep my mind engaged and get me out of the house at least a few days a week. I’ll sell my ice machines when I get too old to climb a ladder to chase gremlins.

Yes, I’ve been enjoying some of your retirement projects vicariously, Bert. Your research and writing projects are quite ambitious. I’m looking forward to hearing about your shooting and reloading adventures. My recent “Tale of Two Rifles” article involved a fair bit of casting, loading, shooting and a dab of load development. Quite honestly it helped me get excited about retirement. I have a few ideas for articles rattling around my addled brain and as soon as one starts making a bit more sense I’ll settle in and commit some keystrokes to that project.

Congrats Mike.  I retired in 2010 and have not been bored at all.  Keep busy at something and you’ll enjoy retirement.  You will run out of required projects fairly quickly so you need to find something else to keep your brain satisfied.  That is why I started shooting modern precision rifles.

Thanks! Weather permitting Jeremy and I are going to shoot some 1892’s. Mine haven’t seen the light of day in years and a nice one in 38WCF just followed Jeremy home. Then maybe a bit of riot gun “familiarization” on the Skeet field.

That does sound fun!  If I were a lot closer, I could show up with some 1892’s as well.  And maybe a few rounds on the Skeet field with my Burgess folding riot shotgun Laugh

Mike,

Congratulations (again)!  It was great to see you last weekend and talk about things.  I look forward to hearing about your progress shooting all of those guns at the Cody show.

Nevada Paul,

If you want to message me privately, I’ll share a Shiner Bock BBQ sauce that pairs well with brisket.  HEB grocery stores here in TX had a little handout with this recipe several years ago and it is pretty darn good.

Great to see you as well, Chris. Glad you got to see some really great Winchesters and even meet a few folks. We’ll have several individual displays at the TGCA Fall show in Denton and I believe WACA will have a display at the NRA show in Dallas later this month. I’m looking forward to seeing lots of folks at Cody, I know the displays there will be pretty awesome as well.

That Burgess would be even more fun than the 1897 “Riot” gun I shot skeet with a few years back. And a few more 1892’s would always be welcome. Thank goodness I haven’t fallen down that rabbit hole, I only have one example in addition to a fun gun.

Congratulations, Clark! I don’t believe I’ll miss those heavy truck parts or surly truck drivers but I don’t know what I’ll do with those decades of part numbers bouncing around in my head. I won’t miss being that “stupid old guy” at the end of the counter, lol. I do have my “retirement” business to run but it hasn’t been taking much of my time.

I’d say we had an 1892 home run. We fired 1892 rifles and carbines in 25-20 Repeater, 32WCF and 38WCF and I picked up a double handful of 44WCF Starline brass. Will not confirm nor deny shooting skeet with riot guns but I will check off one of them and carry on with my cleaning chores.
