Hi all.  I am a new to this forum and seeking advice about my first lever actions.  One is best characterized as a good shooter…  it is a 1976 9422 Win Mag.  The other one that I’m seeking help with now is a 1960 .308 cal. Model 88.The Model.88 is in very nice condition. I don’t want to mar the bluing or diminish its value.  It appears to never have been mounted with a scope and no scope base came with.  I’m hoping o shoot it at the range to see its practical range.  A single piece Weaver base was recommended, to me, but a retired gunsmith friend recommends steel over the Weaver.  I think he’s recommending Leupold bases and rings.  Does it make much of a difference?

Steel is stronger, without a doubt…..  Anyone can mount a set of Weaver rings and bases. Leupold, Redfield, Burris etc. with twist in front rings  and side to side adjustment on the rear needs to be done with a set of alignment bars. (and then lapped) If not done correctly and properly centered you will have ring marks and quite possibly damage your scope. Weaver has been in business for quite some time and their product works well enough for lots of folks. It will be the most economical route. If your 88 holds 1.5″ at 100 yards with factory ammo I would be content.

Best,

Erin

Thanks Erin.  I’m still researching scopes.  150 yards will be more than I see without a scope I reckon.  Weaver has a 4-16x44mm on sale that an enthusiastic owner recommended for my rifle.  Leupolds are in the running, based on other recommendations, but I can buy another firearm for the cost.  What to do, what to do.!
