I’ll be using the Bear Creek .339 coated lead bullet.  I think I’m set for the 5744 powder but particularly interested in other powders such as 3031, 4198 and others.

Steve,

What velocity are you looking to achieve with he cast bullets?  What weight are the bullets?

I have used both 3031 and 4198, but always with the JFP bullets.

The bullets are the 230 grain Bear Creek coated (encapsulated) lead bullets.  I am not looking for stout loads.  And as they are not jacketed bullets, I’m not looking for factory duplication loads either.

Thanks!

Steve,

I would start with 22-grains of 4198 and work it up slowly from there.

Thanks Bert.  I’ll try that. I also have a supply of 3031 – any recommendations for that powder?

I have never tried using 3031 powder with cast lead bullets, only for full velocity jacketed bullets.

Thanks Bert –

I’m going to definitely go with 4198 over 3031.

And as I said, I already have a batch loaded up with 5744.

By the way, Mike Venturino sure writes positively about H4350 for jacketed bullet loads.

Please let me know what you final load ends up being (velocity & accuracy).
