Hi Guys

At local gun show this weekend and found this old box, full of 30 WCF correct soft points and "W "primers. Just wondering your opinions on age and value?

Thanks Bruce

I would value that at $50-$100 to me. If I didn’t collect 1894s it would be lower. Someone who is looking for that specific box or wants some of those cartridges to fill a nicer box might value it higher. I think that it has extra value being a popular Model 1894 caliber, soft point bullet (if that’s what the bullets are) and protected primers. I think the condition of the box is a little beat to be highly sought after, unless a person needs that particular box for something. That’s how I value it in my mind anyway. Maybe a better way to say it is if I wanted to buy it I’d pay $50 and if I had to sell I’d want $100. I have seen people pay more than that for a lower condition box of more common cartridges however. I would also ad that older ammo and collectible ammo selection has been very limited in the small shows I’ve been to this year. Maybe you or someone else can give a report on what they’ve seen. A few years ago it seemed like it was all over the place.

My goals have been high condition unless it’s something quite rare. All of the lower condition boxes I started out with a few years ago have went down the road.

I think the protected primers .210 diameter & box label are clues as to age. Very late 1915 to about 1924 is my guess for age.

Thanks Guys For Information

Brad, It seems here in Ontario that all the good old stuff is in hiding when it comes to ammo. Any thing that people have for sale that is decent is $100-$300 and up.

Thanks Bruce

Bruce

Another thing too is I have no idea how hard or easy it might be to find some of this stuff in Canada…or other places compared to right around here. Thanks for the report.

bhutch,
Nice find. 😀 I see there is a date code but can’t make it out. What is the date code? example: 8-17

The primers are the Winchester Protected Type, primer 5W. It is a small rifle type primer in a bushing.

In the early 1920’s the primer was changed to the Large Rifle type, thus eliminating the bushing.

10 years or so ago, I paid $100 for a similar box but in better shape.

In the book "100 Years Of Winchester Cartridge Boxes", a similar box is shown valued at $150-$250 depending on condition.
