I want to call it a short rifle, too. Saddle ring and carbine butt might tip the scales towards a carbine, IMHO. The absence of a SN in the description is a bit troubling. Sweet looking rifle but waaaay out of my budget.

Thank you, JWA. My presents this year were a cucumber and a hunk of caramel. Simple, but plenty meaningful.I haven’t studied ’73’s, so my questions might be a tad elementary–
The “S” in “Short” looks a bit high of the baseline for the “HORT” and the “T” appears a 1/2 hair high also. Did Winchester keep their lettering perfect, or did the height and slant differ slightly?
Austin’s Guns–In the first photo, the portion of the screws and their holes looks odd: sanded? What clues are evident that this Winchester has a non-factory finish?
And why wouldn’t a seller replace those torn tang screws, especially if the piece had been refinished anyway?
Woods, The case coloring is not original; color, polish, wear, fit, is all wrong. The barrel and mag tube have the same issues. The wood is refinished and the checkering is re-cut. All of the screw heads are messed with.
A super configuration… one of the oddest I know of. I like it, but the lack of original finish makes it impossible to verify originality without careful disassembly, etc.
