I think someone put a shinny object on the gun to distract you from the barrel job.

Side plates probably came from a Ebay sale of leftover parts from a restore job.
On such a hard-used gun as this one, they’re the equivalent of lipstick on a pig; in a word, garish. The gun would be more appealing to me with the original plates.
I agree with Clarence.
RIA rifle called to me. I would have gladly paid the high auction estimate on that one.

Cody search confirms it’s just another brown gun in the current condition, side plates may be helpful for trade bait. Too bad, side plates were probably very attractive at one time. I understand they made good engraving/embellishment projects for jewelers and folks learning the trade. If I wasn’t mad at that 1917 for some reason I’d pass.
