does anyone know when the factory stopped doing this on their model 94s?
Yes, I do…
When Winchester ceased production of the Model 94 Carbines and the Model 64 Rifles on August 23rd, 1942 (at serial number 1343183) to support the WW II efforts, the Type-7 tang marking was also discontinued. The post-WW II production Model 94 Carbines and Model 64 Rifles were devoid of any tang marking, and no longer drilled & tapped for a tang sight.
