I am looking at a Model 71 from 1936 that has a White Line pad installed . Length of pull to , but not including the pad is 12 3/8″ . Length with the steel plate is 13 1/8″ . I have noticed that a fair number seem to have this same pad and was wondering if it might have been an option from Winchester ? I like the rifle otherwise , the finish is original looking and is mostly intact and it has the bolt peep which for me is a must have . I have old Winchester’s  but am not really a collector but like to keep them as original as I can Thanks for any help you can give .

The Whiteline recoil pad is an aftermarket alteration. Winchester used their own solid red rubber pad (with the June 1922 patent date), or a NO-SHOC recoil pad when specifically ordered.

Thank you Bert , that’s kinda what I thought . Might still buy it but I do have an offer in on a “36 long tang with the sight and the correct steel plate. We will see !

I am interested in learning more all Model 71 rifles you own or encounter.  Please stay in touch.

Do you have a copy of the recent article I published discussing the Model 71?

Bert ,

I attempted to reply to your post but hit the wrong button and posted a separate thread instead.
