Hi all, I purchased a gun from an estate several years ago and it has a very beautiful stock with a silver oval inlay in the stock  between the pistol grip and the toe of the stock on the bottom. Please educate me as to why this model 70 had this. I have never seen this before. Thank you!

Would add pictures but not sure how to.

As a guest you would need to use a photo hosting site and link the photos.  Such as Imgur (there are many others).

Highpower-

Inlaid gold or silver monogram ovals could be ordered on a new gun from the Winchester factory.  They were usually placed about midway between the pistol grip and toe in the toe-line of the stock.  Typically people ordering a monogram oval would have also ordered select (fancy) wood.

The option is usually in the catalog on the “Extras” page for Winchester shotguns, but could be had on any gun.  This is an excerpt from the Model 21 Extras page of the 1941 Wholesale-Retail Arms & Accessories catalog.  Note that engraving initials was an additional cost not included in the cost of the monogram plate itself…

Alternatively, the monogram oval could have been added after the rifle was purchased.  Photos of the plate and the full stock would help if you can figure out how to link them…  If you want to send them to me, [email protected], I can post them for you…

Best,

Lou
