I have a Winchester Model 70 carbine in 30-06.  The serial number is G1694XXX.  The 20″ barrel is marked Winchester carbine.  It’s marked made in New Haven and not marked USRA.  Model 70s are not my area of expertise but I don’t believe I have ever run across this variation before.  Any thoughts as to scarcity or value (it’s about 98%).  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Hi MC & Welcome! Believe your Model 70 “Carbine” by serial number was USRA produced about 1983. As to the term “Carbine”, ‘if’ a formal model designation, I have no information. Generically it would be a push-feed action as all were from 1964 through cusp of nineties. A quick check of one of my few USRA Model 70 rifles, 1982 production. Barrel reflects only customary “Winchester” model designation, “XTR Featherweight” & “7mm Mauser”. No vestige of USRA markings. Don’t know how much, if any, help to have been. The few facts & observations I can tribute, presented here. Hopefully one of the resident experts able to help further.
Parting reminder matter I often mention only as caveat. Prior era guns, generally many opportunities for modifications/component swaps. No inference here, but sometimes such issues of “custom house”, “limited editions”, “one-off”, etc.; such matters simply reduced to aftermarket ‘customization.
Best! 🙂

There were post-64 M70 Carbines and they were marketed as such. Push feed guns with 20” barrels. The Carbines are not very common and command a small premium over the Standard Rifles.

IF you are going for a Model 70 carbine, original pre ’64 quite pricey! IF, your intent on a carbine length Model 70 in the ‘new era’, first pretty easy to make, if simply to chop off barrel. IF you’re seeking something factory original… “What’s in a name, a rose by any other name…” Poetic but true. Later nineties to early ‘double ought’ production.

Model 70 “Classic Compact”, in great short action, CRF with the factory producing such “carbine by any other name”. Chamberings: 308/243 Win or 7mm 08. Barrel length 20″, LOP 13″, Wt listed 6 lbs. A ‘fetching’ rifle. Quick, handy, lightweight. The aside my liking, real steel rather than alloy bottom metal. What’s not to like? Mine in 7mm 08. Bought used w/scope rings & complete set of loading dies! A really good, quality, nice, ‘no pretenses’ rifle. 🙂
I like it!!! [/list]

My take
