Hey guys my son just sent me a pic of a winchester model 53 in 25-20. I have not seen it in person but the barrel says nickel steel and it really has a lot of blueing on it. A lot more than the receiver which has no blueing at all left. Does that even sound normal??I would normally think it should have weathered similar in finish. It is a 3000 four digit serial number.  What are your thoughts.

Concur… the Model 53 was manufactured during the height of the “flaking” receiver blue era.  Many of them are found with nearly 100% of the rust bluing intact on the barrel, but almost 0% bluing on the receiver frame.

What is the actual serial number?  Solid frame or Take Down?

Are the model 53’s a desirable rifle in 25-20 ?? I know absolutly nothing about this model. I  collect the 1892’s. If I am not mistaken i think it can be had for $1,000. Have no idea if that is good or not.

The desirable Model 53 rifles are those chambered for the 44 WCF cartridge, and those rifles that are in excellent condition.  The 25-20 was the most common caliber for the Model 53 (50% of the total production), and the Solid frame rifles outnumbered the Take Down rifles by a 2:1 margin.

For me the bore condition would be a big factor. Hard to find a good bore in a 25-20 and I’d want one I could shoot.
