I recently purchased a model 1895 takedown. The number on the barrel (under the forearm) does not match the serial number of the rifle. The barrel is numbered in the 70,000’s and the receiver is numbered in the 400,000’s.

Should they match? The Winchester manual says you should not use any takedown barrel, other than the one that came with the receiver.

It is a 30 Army caliber.

thanks, Richard

Richard,

Winchester did not serialize the barrels on any of their Take Down rifles. I suspect the number in the 70,000 range is a work order number. Can you post a clear picture of the markings on the underside of the barrel?

Bert here are pictures of the barrel markings. the 30 Army is pretty faint on the under side, but the rest of the markings are clear.

I am of the strong opinion that your Model 95 was returned to the factory for rework (new barrel), and the number stamped on the bottom of the barrel is a work order number.  Unfortunately, there are no surviving records for the late production Model 95s that could confirm the original configuration or a Return & Repair.
