Hello,

I’m new to the forum and this is my first post. I recently acquired a Model 1894 Carbine in 30 WCF and would love it if you guys could critique it for me. Good or bad.  I’m mostly curious about the sites which are marbles. Thanks, Andywinchester2.jpegwinchester1.jpegwin14.jpegwin13.jpegwin12.jpegwin11.jpegwin10.jpeg

Hello Andy,

The issue that jumps out at me is the fact that the gumwood stocks have been noticeably sanded and refinished.  They are now undersized to the point that they no longer fit up to the butt plate and the receiver tangs correctly.  On a positive note, the steel parts have not been refinished.  In regard to the sights, it is possible that they are original, but no sure way to confirm it.  They most certainly have been on your SRC for a very long time, and at a minimum would be “period” installed.

Bert,

Thank you for your insight. Would a letter say anything about the sites.

Maybe… there is no guaranty that any sight information will be listed.

No provision for a sling ring.  That’s special on a carbine.  RDB

Yes, but not something most collectors are willing to pay extra for.

There’s a lot of carbines out there with sling rings that weren’t shipped with them originally.  I used to know dealers who every time they got one of these carbines in, they added a ring. To them, it was an easy way to get more money for their carbine.

Welcome, Andrew. Appears to be an honest old SRC. Refinishing the wood on a well-used carbine was probably good maintenance practice several decades ago but today collectors turn their noses up when they see it. How does it shoot?
