I have a model 1894 with serial number LLLLXX. Is there any significance to the four L’s before the two numbers represented by the X’s?
As Michael mentioned, the “L” is actually a “1”. The tool & die shop person who made the die stamps was lazy. The same “L” appears on all of the Winchester models that were in production late 1900 into early 1901.
Here is an example of a Model 1894 with the “L” digits.
This is a Model 1897 with the same “L” digits.
