OfflineRecently won an auction and received what I call an “upgrade” of my standard 86. It’s a 1900 Manufactured (122,659) 26 in round barrel 45-70 Semi deluxe, Takedown, pistol grip, and shotgun butt.
Figured everyone would enjoy seeing it, I plan to hunt with it and is in perfect shape for that with a “decent” bore. I’ll be ordering the letter for it here in a day or 2!

Congrats on the 86′. Is it a nickel steel barrel by chance? If my thinking is right, it is probably earlier than when nickel steel was standardized on 45-70.
No, the barrel isn’t marked nickel steel. It has the 2 line barrel address. Still was absolutely ecstatic to own it!

I like this rifle. I like the round barrel just fine.
As someone who spent exactly what he could on something like this, I do too and really happy to own it. Sure I wish it was octagon also but they all have there own story and aren’t getting any easier to find.

OfflineSometimes, the “shorthand” used by collectors can be a real obstacle to new people coming to our hobby.
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS feel free to ask questions. It’s the only way any of us learn. None of us are born knowing anything about any of this, and ALL of us are the beneficiaries of the generous people who came before us and were willing to share their knowledge.
By the way, I really lust after your new rifle!

I have enough knowledge to be dangerous lol, on the forum enough to know but not everything. There are so much to each model of Winchester it can be truly a mind boggle especially in todays day and age.

Do you plan on getting a letter on this one? Should you do so, please post it.
If I was in the market for a Winchester 1886 in .45-70 to use on a hunt, this is what I would purchase.
Yes I have a letter on order so will see, I will still be keeping my eyes out for an ELW and a SRC as I really would like one of each. I’m starting to kind of narrow down my collecting to things I can use yearly, that and ones my kids will be able to get use out of someday!

Well…
They talk about the K economy, K spending, and the same goes for gun collecting as well. The nice stuff that we can afford falls into the middle of the K, yours is at the lower part of the middle K. That aspect of the market has crashed in the last year. Down 25%. The bottom part of the K is the junk, that always has a market for the downtrodden. The top part of the K is for the really rich, for the top notch stuff, it will always have a following and will likely outpace inflation.
You are better off rarely buying top notch stuff than buying a few things yearly your kids might use. And, what’s to say your kids even show an interest in the junk we adore?
