I am considering picking up a vintage correct Lyman peep sight for my Winchester 54. I believe I should be looking for a Lyman 48 W JS. Can anyone confirm this?

Correct–that’s the short slide version of the 48, requiring no inletting into the stock for the base.  Original long slide is 48W.
