I see quite a few Winchester photos of rifles/carbines that do not have barrel / receiver proof marks.

Is it that only certain models have proof marks? Or only pieces made before or after a certain date have them?

Or are all Winchesters supposed to have them?

I don’t know the specifics of each model but previous posts here on this subject have indicated that Winchester started using the matching proof marks on the barrel and receiver sometime around 1905.  When a barrel has a proof mark and the receiver doesn’t, and the serial number is a 19th Century one, you can be certain the barrel has been replaced.

Kevin,

After July, 17 1905 they were proofed. Here is a good post to read on the subject.

Kevin

The slide action 22’s (1906 & 1890) were a bit later……. I think out in 1908.

There are a number of things that collectors are drawn to and Winchesters that are pre-proof mark period is one them.

Thanks guys, just the info I needed. Since I’m purchasing pre-1899 models it doesn’t impact me much.

Thanks for the thread link Bob, good info.

This would fit with what  I have observed on the Model 1892 rifles.  Around approximately SN 300,000 is when the barrel and receiver are proofed on the upper surfaces of both.
