OfflineI recently bought this rifle, what I thought was a 92 Carbine but later learned that there is such a thing as a “Short Rifle,” so now I’m confused about what I have. It’s a 44 W.C.F. with a 19 inch round barrel, no saddle ring. It has a forearm cap, straight plain stock, crescent steel buttstock, full length magazine, crowned muzzle, LOP=12.75”, forearm a little more than 9 inches. Do I have a Carbine or something called a short rifle, or a cut down rifle? Help! Cody had nothing but the serial number application.![]()

Thank you,

OfflineYour 1892 has been cut down. The picture showing the magazine hanger tells us that. Looking at the position of the magazine hanger, it may have been a 20” short rifle originally.
My 20” 1892 short rifles have a fore end that measures about 8 1/2 inches and the rear sight dove tail is closer to the receiver frame.
Michael (Twobit) is the man with 1892s and he will chime in soon.

Thank you,
Good morning,
No doubt about it. The barrel and magazine have been cut down from what was most likely an original standard 24 in length. Both the front sight and magazine retaining band are not correctly positioned. They should be as shown in the attached images. Additionally, the rear sight would be positioned closer to the receiver face and the forend wood would be shorter than yours. What is the full serial number of the rifle? I can see 840???

Thank you, you are both absolutely correct. It has been cut down but still a nice shooter and that’s what I bought it as. The seller said he thought it had been cut down but not by him and he wasn’t sure. Again, thank you guys.
What is the serial number? I would like to add the rifle into my survey.
