Hi all.

This is my first post as I have just joined as a guest from Queensland Australia.

I have joined not so much as a collector but as a Black Powder shooter. I do have a few but not expensive collector type firearms. I cant afford the pension funds tied up in them.

I have also owned a copy of the Winchester Book ( One of one thousand,) for a number of years and have got a lot of info from it.

I have owned and sold on a 92, 73, and 94 which have all been shooters.

Currently I am working on a couple of 73,s that I bought in bits at a Rendevous years ago and have finally decided to get them in shooting condition.

I had tried to join the Winchester Owners Forum but for some reason my email address did not allow it. I joined here instead but if you think its the wrong place for my questions let me know and I will bow out.

Thanks.

Keith

As I said I have two receivers I bought and have gradually been finding other bits. They are not collectors ,but I just like to save old guns and if possible get them shooting again.

Receiver 211719B is a saddle ring and still has its top cover, 392989B is not.

Color me jealous.  Your picture reminds me of all the bins full of parts and pieces I see at gun shows.  Other than the receiver, I don’t think I’m savvy enough to jump on a screw or a pin or whatever in my quest to put a gun together. Embarassed  Otherwise, I’d make that a hobby.  Good luck and please share your results and lessons.

It looks like you have the makings of a 44 carbine and a 44 rifle.

I have amongst the bits a 44 barrel with pitted bore, full length 44 magazine and fore end, two 32 cal half mags with fore ends , two butt stocks both with trap doors but slightly different butt plates, one 32 barrel also rusted out and some action bits I think belong to a 92.

There is one bolt I think is a 32 and two firing pins. I asked on a local shooting forum and managed to get a 44 bolt and firing fin so getting there.

I will start with the saddle ring as it has side plates and the cover and the 44 barrel screws into it OK. Both barrels have had the muzzle with the front sights cut off. May be they had suppressors fitted or something. I think I can make a shooter out of the 44 anyway.

I decided to reline the barrel so as to make a shooter out of it. The drill is not long enough to do it all from one end , in fact it was not long enough to do it from each end so I had to add a bit, and the pilot was a bit small for the bore so I made a bush for it.

After it was drilled , the liner was still a bit big so turned it down to fit. The liner was a bit shorter than the barrel so had to shorten it then try the liner for a sliding fit.

Once that was OK, as my chamber reamer had arrived I cut the chamber and cleaned off all surfaces with brake cleaner.

I decided to glue the liner in with Loctite 209 and glue it with the barrel and breechbolt in place so it would take care of headspace .

After cutting the notches for the extractor and the case shelf thing at the bottom, I removed the lifter just leaving the bolt and toggles.

Then after smearing a spent case with silicone spray and inserting in the chamber I covered all surfaces with the Loctite and kept adding as I inserted the liner from the muzzle end. Pushed it down till it all lined up and the case was hard against the breech block and left it overnight to set.

No photos here as I did not have much time and  I have not done anything like this before.
