Hey all,

I have a cool Win 1895 lever gun that is so cool. I know the history of the gun. It was given to my father by family members of a ranch here in Southern Az, related to the Slaughter ranch. The story goes that a wagon of rifles and supplies were on the way across the border into Mexico and the ranchers ended up with a case or some of the rifles and distributed amongst some of the ranchers. This is one of them. According to family members this rifle was used in several encounters with bandits, soldiers and revolutionaries from Mexico, only if it could talk.

I tried to post pictures but have no idea how.

According to Ser # it was manufactured in 1907, stamped .30 govt.1906 so I assume 30’06 I know a lot were 30-40 Krag. I was told this was 30-06 but please confirm.

Im a shooter and would love to shoot this rifle. Is it Valuable as is? its pretty rough, it would be cool to restore but I love the old Petina and the historic look.

Yes it does… but with an e-membership you do not get the annual calendar or the hard copy Collector magazines.

Just a suggestion, if you reload.  The 1916 Winchester Catalog lists the 30 Gov’t M. ’06 cartridge with a 150 grain bullet to have a velocity of 2,700 f.p.s..

Most of todays loadings have more pressure and will possibly cause extra ‘head space’ problems over time.  Just something to consider.  Plus the lighter loads are more pleasant to shoot.  RDB

Too bad that new providers of ammo don’t give the chamber pressures.

Yes, I called Remington to ask about their core lock 150gn and they hung up on me.  These recoil less than the 150s I’ve loaded. I also checked my headspace with scotch tape on the back of a cartridge. If I remember correctly I think I measured around .005”

Sorry to hear about the poor response from R.

Max headspace is .007″ but Winchester recommends about .003″.  They did a study on the 30-40 rounds and found that .003″ was best for not getting case head separations.  Adjust your base of case to shoulder measurement when sizing to get the .003″.  Your brass and rifle will last longer too.  Of course to do this you have to fire form your brass to find out the longest dimension of your chamber.  SAMMI chambers are often on the long side of the Spec and the cartridge manufacturers have the base to shoulder on the short side of the Spec.

Just looking for advise,

Would you guys leave it the way it is? which is so cool and I know the basic history on this gun….or……would you freshen it up?

Kenpo5,

That’s kind of a loaded question, as you will receive many different opinions on you’re question! IMHO!

Also, what do you mean by, ‘Freshen it Up”?  That can be taken several different ways! IMO!

With the history that you have by the story that you tell, and given to you’re Father, why not leave this historical piece alone?

Here’s what can commonly happen, while a person starts to freshen it up! Once you start, it takes a lot of self Restraint, to not to keep going further. Yeah it’s used and used well. That’s history! Can’t bring it back to that point, and have the piece, still tell the story, as we view it!

I would try to document as much information, as you might have done already, on this fine specimen with a story to tell, and display it proudly, keeping it in the family! Documenting as much information, and the people involved, is very important in this situation, as it starts with you’re father. A great advantage for you to start with. I would contact Jessica, at the Cody Wyoming Museum, that houses the Winchester Factory Records, and possibly a work up sheet.Don’t look for any information pertaining to you’re story, as Winchester records won’t help you with that.

My point being, as much as you can verify, will be nice to hand down to family members, as these stories disappear with time, if not documented as they are remembered and told!

Thanks for sharing! Smile

IMO, and I have many varying ones on this topic, based on the possible stories the rifle has and it being in reasonable condition to my eyes, I’d leave it as is and just make sure it’s cleaned up, oiled, and kill any red rust that may be hiding. In other words, a good disassembly and “full service” by a competent gunsmith (or yourself) is all it needs. The tales of its exploits of course have probably grown taller over the years but there’s probably some truth to them in one form or another. Very cool rifle!
