Does anyone have any idea why the serial number is marked on the tang and the take down collar on this rifle and the poor job stamping?  I have never seen one quite like this!   http://www.gunbroker.com/item/575668748

Because some fool thought his Model 1894 Take Down Rifle should be marked like a Model 1897 Take Down Shotgun. The serial number on the bottom of the receiver frame is not the original factory number. I have no explanation for why it would be marked across the top of the frame right behind the hammer.

I really liked this gun until I saw the serial number(s).

Not a very common rear sight. First one I’ve seen like it.

No, that is the rear sight that is found in .32 Special rifles of that era. Bert would have the specifics as to when it was discontinued, but I believe it originated in 1902 with the advent of the .32 Special cartridge.

Your rifle is from 1914. That sight was no longer listed in the catalogs starting in 1915 so, your gun was made just prior to that sight being discontinued.
