I just picked this up from a friend, cleaned it up and tried doing some research on it.
How exactly do I know if I have an authentic 1894? It is a Winchester 1894 Takedown, 30WCF
S/N stamped on bottom forward of receiver is 134849
Barrel is (about 50/50) hexagon to straight.
Pictures attached (hopefully).
Thanks!

The best method to verify the authenticity of your Model 1894 is to contact the Cody Firearms Museum records office and obtain a factory letter.
Based on the serial number, it was manufactured in December 1901. The barrel is actually part octagon & part round.
Your pictures did not post. You will need to upload them to a photo hosting website, and then post the URL to them here.

It appears that what you have is a Model 1894 Extra Light Weight (ELW) Take Down rifle with a 1/2 octagon barrel, a 1/2 mag, and a shotgun butt. Your first step is get the Factory letter for it from the CFM records office and confirm that the rifle matches the letter.
