Hello everybody, this is my first post here after lurking for a bit and watching the Cinnabar channel for some time. I recently picked up the following 1892 at a decent rate and I would like some thoughts on it and also some help on finding a proper buttplate and rear sight.
Looks like I have a 1905 make, 38-40 SRC. Barring that it left the factory in this configuration the half mag and the shotgun condor on the buttstock makes me think it’s a special order.
Unfortunately, the rear sight got pushed out in preference for the Lyman #1A, the saddle ring was cut off, and the buttplate is missing altogether.
What should I look for in a replacement buttplate? It seems like there was multiple types including a serrated metal one and a moulded plastic one.
Any thoughts are helpful on the carbine altogether, I’m pretty green when it comes to Winchesters and there are not as many online resources as I wish on these old guns. A request has been sent for factory records on it from the Cody Firearms Museum.
