My brother picked up a 1886 Winchester with some unique characteristics.  S.N. 154177.  It appears to be a deluxe model take-down rifle with pistol grip and checkered stocks. It has a checkered steel shotgun butt plate.  It does not appear to have deluxe wood.  It has a Lyman #21 aperture sight.  Manufactured date is 1915. Here is something a little different—the 24″ barrel reads “Model 71 /.348”. How did this happen?  Gun is in excellent condition, about 98%.

Max,

Does he have a CFM research sheet or a factory letter for it?

Can you provide pictures of the rifle?

I suspect that it was originally a 33 WCF and that it was later rebarreled using a Model 71 barrel.

Thanks Bert,

He does not have a factory letter or CFM research sheet.

I tried to send photos, but they were not accepted.  Maybe size was too large, and I don’t know how to change image size.

Maybe I should try again.

Received, but they do not show enough detail.  Close-ups of the barrel markings are needed.

That combination is not seen often at all, but I think you probably have the answer Bert. The question might be-did the factory do it.

What I find most interesting is that the rifle is described as a takedown.
