First post here but been a member for a while- I just picked up a 1903 production 1886 Sporting rifle with the half tube. It’s in remarkably good shape minus two things. It is missing the Carrier hook (part #62 on attached part diagram) and someone cut the stock 2″ and put a cheap shotgun butplate on it.

I’m looking for a good source that might have the carrier hook- I have some emails out to some people but no reply yet. My other option is ordering through Taylors the part for their remanufacture- I believe they used the traditional blueprints but I’m not 100% sure.

If all else fails, I could find someone in Phoenix with an 1886 that I could take apart, draw up and model a blueprint for one and machine it out, but I’m trying to avoid that.

Thanks! Putting some pictures of the rifle as well.

It’s not nearly as complicated as you assume.  There are gun dealers that are regularly parting out old Winchesters on eBay and you should be able to find the part there, though for the extractors they usually sell the breech bolt as a whole assembly.  Also, this place sells modern made replicas for the antique models:  http://homesteadparts.com/shopcart/commerce.cgi?cart_id=1525031454.2753&product=Winchester_1886&pid=2167  .  Not sure who Taylor’s is but if they are one of the importers of replicas, those parts don’t fit Winchesters.  Also, modern made Winchester Model 1886’s do not have interchangeable parts with the originals.  As to the buttstock, you can find originals for sale from time to time on eBay, and to a lesser degree, on GunBroker.  These are quite pricey and almost always have damage to the wood around the tang areas.

After looking at a full size exploded view of the Model 1886 I see that I was looking at part # 69 on your attached diagram.  The carrier hook also can be found online at times though it comes up much less frequently that the extractor.

Yeah, that’s why I’m turning here, I can’t find one. ebay, gunbroker, and I have about 5-6 emails out and I’ve gotten 2 replies that are a no go so far.

Homestead is about 30 minutes away from me and one of the first people I contacted, i’m hoping I hear back tomorrow morning.

I found the proper crescent buttplate as well as a nice piece of walnut that I’m going to start to form a stock and foregrip from

Also, this is Taylors. http://www.taylorsfirearms.com/1886-lever-action-rifle.html

I know a lot of the parts may not match up, but from the fuzzy diagram it sure looks close. comparing the parts I have and the diagram it doesn’t look like too much has changed, but I realize my chances of it fitting are slim. I’m debating on ordering one and compare it to an original just for future reference if someone was ever in my position.

Don’t know who Taylor is importing from but over the years I’ve heard repeatedly that Uberti is the only foreign replica manufacturer that uses US measurements, while all others use metric.  Also don’t know if that is still true after Beretta taking them over.

Fair enough. I ordered one, I’ll see how it looks and see how it compares to one once I find an original.

Did the parts from Taylor’s work?  I need one of these too!
