I ran up on a rifle today that was an 1885 serial number 15710 and it had a half octagon 30″ barrel that looks like it’s been on it forever. Barrel is marked with a Stevens Pope address on the flat mostly covered by the rear sight. Gun letters as a 38-55 no 3 octagon barrel. It is now chambered in 32-40. Still has pretty good case color and seems to be a good solid gun that needs a little cleaning. What’s the story on these Pope guns and do you guys think it sounds like a righteous gun?
Don’t know anything about them but this might give you some idea: http://merzantiques.com/photo/rare-pope-barreled-winchester-model-1885-high-wall-schuetzen-rifle-in-.38-5
"This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."
The rifle has been rebarreled, and not necessarily by Harry Pope. Stevens used his name on barrels that they made as a selling point. In my experience, that old high-wall is worth a lot less than it would have been with its original Winchester 38-55 barrel.
