Hello Everyone,

I am currently working on rebuilding a Winchester 1873 second model from a receiver. I have had trouble locating the correct style lower tang for the second model. I have checked all major sources to my knowledge including Ebay and they all seem to not carry or be out of second model lower tangs. As an alternative, could I use a third model tang as a starting point, create a computer aided design sketch, and then machine a new second model tang using a rented computer controlled milling machine (the second and third model tangs seem to have a very similar shape disregarding the placement of some screw holes). Also, are there any other trigger group parts or parts in general that are unique to the second model 1873 that I need to think about (reason being right now I can only find mostly third model Winchester 1873 parts).

Thanks for the input. Please advise.

– Ryan

Ryan,

They do come up for sale on Ebay but not every day. The last one was  October 27th and sold for $160. But if your into machining I would take a 3rd model and if you drill 4 holes, two of them are taped between the hammer and sear pin and the other two have pin installed to hold the back of the tang in the receiver.

Ryan, I have a second model lower tang, it letters rifle, round barrel, plain trigger, 38/40, 70 some thousand range. Does that work for you. T/R

Wow. Thanks for replying. That would work great. If you don’t mind me asking what would you be willing to sell it for?

Ryan, The tang is 20% blue turning purple, the rest gray, nice serial numbers with horns on the eights and a curly three in it. No rust, pits, or abuse all original, I bought it 20 years ago in a box of 73 parts. Three day inspection, $100 plus shipping with no parts attached. You can PM me. T/R
