I recently picked up my first Model 1873 and there are two minor issues I would like to fix.  The dust cover slides freely and will not catch.  Of course, both the cover and the stop are worn, but might a replacement stop with more metal at the end fix the issue.  I assume this is a common problem.

The ring pin is only partly inserted and I’m pretty sure it is an in correct pin.,  Who might have an original?

Thanks for any help.

Ron,

The dust cover is opened by the tab on the top of the extractor hitting the stop on the bottom side of the dust cover. If either one are worn or modified the dust cover will not open or if the cover and mortise channel is worn the cover will lift up and jump the extractor. This happens on gun that have seen a lot of use or have been worked on by someone that does not know what they were doing. Another problem that happens on worn guns is the bolt can wear the receiver and the bolt sags causing this problem.

The ring pin? Are you referring to the pin in the magazine tube?

I’m figuring you mean the saddle ring staple.  They come up from time to time on eBay but here is a modern made replacement:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/Winchester-Saddle-Ring-Stud-Staple1892-92-1873-73-Marlin-1892/142558884633?epid=1653254873&hash=item21312bf319:g:5qkAAOxy14VRMCpT

The dust cover spring is missing so there is nothing to hold the cover open/closed.  I have seen a reference on this forum to someone who deals in vintage Winchester parts but I can’t locate the name.  Can anyone make a suggestion?  If not I may have to pick up a repro spring on ebay.

Thanks to 1873man who helped me fix the magazine tube ring pin.  The tube had been turned 90 degrees so the pin would not fit through the holes.  Turned the tube and the pin slipped in correctly.

You may be thinking of Buckingham’s Antique Winchesters but unfortunately he passed a couple of years ago.  New reproduction parts are available at homesteadparts.com and there is a guy from Missouri on eBay that goes by the handle “drwinchester1873” and also “2006mustanggt” on GunBroker who is always parting out old Winchesters.

Hello Blackjack,

Is this the third model you had a mag ring issue or a first model? You can buy the springs all day long for a third model but finding a first model spring is a lot harder to find.

Ron,

That is a third model so those can be had on Ebay. I checked and Dr Winchester has some on there and some with the dust covers. He has a repo one and one that looks like its been worn down and rebent ( looks short). I would say most of the parts dealer will have them too.

Bob

repo one
