I have a Winchester 1873 carbine 2nd series that has a tang with no serial numbers. are the last 3 on other parts?
No, they are not. The 3-digit numbers found on the inside surfaces of the receiver (tang), butt stock (upper tang channel or end grain area) or on the butt plate are assembly numbers, not serial numbers.

I thought i read some were that if it was sent back for trigger work that thy put a trigger assembly in with no serial numbers.
If it was sent back for a set trigger. Does the rifle in question have a set trigger installed?

OfflinePost some picture of the lower tang to see what it looks like. You can pull the stock and measure the thickness of the tang where the serial number would be and you can tell if it never had one or was removed.

OfflineI measured several tangs I have and there is about .020″ tolerance to the thickness of the tang at the serial number. The average was about .2″ and then I measured a tang I have that the serial was gone but I was able to pull it with acid and its thickness was on the plus side the of the average. I really thought this would work but its not. I would still like to see pictures to see what it looks like.
