I have recently come across a Winchester 1873 that was manufactured in 1883. I am looking for parts to possibly make this a working firearm. I was curious if anyone knows of a company that has or will make these parts. I am also curious about the weapon its self. I don’t know if I should preserve the gun as is or put new parts in it to see if I can get it to working condition. It needs the right linkage assembly, firing pin, carrier lever spring , a magazine spring, dust cover, and sight ramp. Am I hurting the value of this gun by replacing these parts? How do I find out if its safe to even fire? How do I get a fair appraisal? Does it need special ammunition?
Luke,
First thing is to post some pictures of it so we can get a idea of what shape its in now so we can tell you what you should do with it. As far as parts, the best place to buy original parts is Ebay. there are guys parting out 73’s all the time on there. You just have to figure out what vintage of 73 you have. That can be determined by the serial number or by pictures and what caliber it is. There are 3 variations to the 73, 1st, 2nd and 3rd models so there is some differences in parts. If you can post pictures here you can send them to me. Once we have some good closeups and overall pictures we can tell you what its worth now. The 73 will shoot smokeless ammo that you could buy locally until recent history.
