Gentlemen, maybe someone knows the answer.... I have a Winchester 1866 in my collection. The lower tang was broken
so the serial number is missing. The barrel has all the standard markings for 1866. But the barrel diameter is 0.430 and the bolt is centerfire.
The chamber is a perfect match for 44 Russian. The upper tang is very short and has only one wood screw.
Is this a rifle or carbine? Pictures showing the different parts of the gun would help a lot including the left side of the lower tang. If there is some of the original tang remaining it might have some markings. As a guest you would need to save them to a third party host site and then link to them. If you have problems with that you can email them to me at the below address.

Case length. 1866 .88″, S&W Russian .97″, S&W SPL 1.16″. The rim diameter of the 3 are all different but will work. The head diameters. 1866 .445″, S&W Russian .457″, S&W Spl .457″. So either the S&W Russian or the S&W Special can work as long as the chamber is not too tight. Whichever is easiest to find.
