what's the approximate date that the model 94 carbine went from "long" forearm wood to short after the barrel band?

A friend of mine is looking at a model 94 sn 1754423 and it has the short fore end wood after the barrel band, no marking on the upper tang, no holes for receiver sight, and 30 -30 Win, instead of 30 wcf.  Approximately what date did they go from “long wood to short”.

Thanks,

Al

Al,

Based on the current results contained in my Model 94 research survey, the transition from the “long wood” forend stock to the “short wood” forend stocks began very near serial number 1748000 (very late in the year 1950), and was complete by 1754300 (early in the year 1951). The caliber marking change from “30 W.C.F.” to “30-30 WIN.” took place in the 1669500 – 1676400 serial number range, which was in the first half of the year 1950.

Thanks Bert, so it looks like this short wood carbine is correct given it is a late 1950?

My opinion only, of course, but by shortening the forearm of the carbine, Winchester really “cheapened” the appearance of their 1894 carbines.  Realistically, how much money did they save much to the detriment of aesthetics?

Yes, that would be my assessment of it.
