What does the Letter after the serial number mean ?

Hey everyone. I know it’s probly been asked before but I can’t find the answer so sorry in advance !

What’s the letter at the end of the serial number mean on my 1873 src ? Serial number is 265344B which I see as 1888

The B is a minor mechanical change as far as I have found. I don’t have your carbine in the survey I’m doing on the 73. What is the caliber and is the barrel standard length?

Hi Bob. Thank you ! It’s 44-40. The barrel is 20 inches.
