this is my first post. I have a number of Winchesters and am an aficionado but no expert.

I just picked this up cheap (I hope). Barrel measures 21.75”. I’m pretty sure it was cut down and a short magazine added. I don’t recognize the front sight. It’s pretty tall. I’m not sure about the stock and buttplate either. Otherwise it looks  good and the work seems to have been well done.
I’m also curious how to value it. I wonder how much a barrel circumcision detracts from the value.
mom gonna attempt to post some pictures.
thanks for your help.

Lawrence,

Unfortunately, both the barrel and magazine tube were cut down (chopped).  Additionally, the rear sight is not original. I cannot see enough of the butt stock to tell if it is original or a replaced.  The butt appears to have a Winchester hard rubber butt plate on it.  What is the S/N on this rifle?  Can you post pictures showing the area where the butt stock adjoins the receiver frame and tangs?

The butt stock & hard rubber plate appear to be original, albeit special order.  It is too bad somebody unwisely decided to chop the barrel and magazine tube.

How would I value this? We still haven’t settled on a price.

Thanks for the quick reply. I barely got done with lunch and you answered my questions.
sorry about the valuation question. I’m sure you get inundated with them. It’s not really collectible so I’m probably gonna pass on it.
thanks for confirming my suspicions.

That would be a wise choice in my opinion… unless it is priced as a “shooter” grade rifle (something < $500).

Interestingly, this rifle has a fluted comb which was a variation at this time.  It doesn’t add any value to this particular rifle, but it is a somewhat less than commonplace variation.

Welcome, Lawrence. Good eye, good call. Lots of honest, unmolested guns on the market right now. If you want a good collector grade Winchester one will come your way. Happy hunting!
