I had a customer come in with a Model 1894 that is in the original red and black checkered box along with the paperwork. She was told that the gun was never fired and it looks like that could be true. This rifle is serial numbered in the range that Winchester supposedely never used (2,598,6xx), and that number is also on the endflap of the box. An unfired pre-64 Model 94 in the box is rare enough , but I was wondering what the serial number would add to the value. I’m hoping someone can give me a fair value for this rifle because I would like to help her out. Thanks in advance.
Your customer brought in a “Model 94” versus an “1894”. The published information concerning the serial numbers > 2586000 is false. Winchester ended the pre-1964 production at serial number 2600011. Accordingly, the serial numbers between 2586000 – 2599999 do not bring any extra value premium. Thus far, I have documented (surveyed) 108 Model 94 Carbines in the 2586000 – 2599964 serial number range. I would like to add the specimen you have, but need the entire serial number (I have 2598632 and 2598670 in my survey).
The fact that it is NIB is where the premium will come from. In the collector market, it is worth at least $1,600, and possibly several hundred more.
