so why is the 66 carbine so cheap? would this be a mistake in purchasing?
What say ye experts?

I’m no expert but it seems to be priced in line with the 4th Edition Red Book. I think I grade a little low so you may be right.
Manny,
While I do not believe that it is significantly overpriced, it is certainly not a collector grade Model 1866. The bronze has been cleaned with something abrasive, and the stocks have been sanded and refinished. The butt stock may not even be original to the rest of the gun, as it fits up to the receiver frame very poorly (way undersized).

Had issues with the butt stock as well, fitting around the tang caught my eye pretty quickly. I’ve fondled less than a dozen 1866’s so can’t say much. I couldn’t pay that much for it because I can’t shoot it and most collectors won’t want it.

Congrats on the ’73!
In all honesty if I was looking to add a 66 to my collection it would likely be a gun like this one
.
While still very new at this I was pleased that as a result of receiving so much help from members here I was able to quickly identify a couple reasons for the lower price.
mjuarez, good score on the 73. I’d like to have a 73 or 86 short rifle in my collection at some point.
