Based on the description, hard to know if the seller knows what he’s peddling. But, “highly suspect” seems quite generous
I know this might be a bit of a shock to some of you, but I am trying to “mellow out” in the written responses that I post in my rapidly advancing years

Usually, as many age, they go the other direction.

OfflineJeez Bert, don’t go getting all mellow and politiclly correct on Us, I like the “straight up”, it’s either black or it’s white approach I’ve always got from You, I don’t have to guess at what You’re sayin’.

I am more like fine Whiskey… I get smoother and mellower with age, but please don’t leave me in the old oak barrel for too long!

Yep, humans were not supposed to be underwater that long without side effects. Navy form of PTSD. Do you get a little more each month for your mental issues?

No, I do not, but if such a program existed, I would already be a Zillionaire!!
An old shipmate of mine recently sent this to me asking how many I wanted…

Bert, I like the shirt. T/R
I do too… but then again, I purposefully sank perfectly good ships at least several hundred times before deciding I shouldn’t do it again! The trick is making sure that the total number dives equals the number of surfacing’s… kind of like airplanes. Take-offs and successful landings need to be the same… and purposefully jumping out of, or ejecting from an airplane is not part of the plan!!

If the barrel length doesn’t match the letter, best to move on! Even if it’s not mentioned in the letter and is correct, it doesn’t match the letter and will forever be a problem.

Interesting that the rifle sat in the warehouse over 9 years before it finally shipped. Evidently not much of a demand for the 38-70.
Don
I have never understood why Winchester bothered with the 38-70 WCF. With the plethora of 38-55 Single Shot and Model 1894 rifles, the 38-56 WCF Model 1886 rifle, and the 38-72 WCF Model 1895 rifles, there was no reason why the 38-70 WCF was needed.

Apparently 21 3/4″ barrels weren’t too popular back then, either.
All kidding aside wood has probably had some help but this one may be worth a closer look and a phone call to verify barrel length.

Mike,
The CFM letter clearly indicates that the rifle was manufactured with a 26-inch barrel, and the pictures of the rifle indicate a much shorter barrel. Some enterprising shyster tried to make a valuable rifle even more valuable by turning it into a “Short” rifle. Fortunately, his efforts were all for naught.
