I did see the one at Merz.  The only common points are the caliber, overall size, and the fact that the gun is refinished.   I have heard nothing back from Century Arms so that may be a dead end.

Beginning to wonder how many of these guns are out there, any idea? Guessing hundreds, if not thousands.

I have no idea how many similar marked guns are out there.  It would be interesting to know if there are non Winchester marked guns.

Based on the number that have turned up and the circumstances under which they came to your attention there are likely quite a few. I suspect most will never make it to your surveys unless you get a lot of participation from overseas. Hopefully someday a Winchester from across the pond will be able to shed some light on this subject for you someday.
