When I removed stock I saw” special” stamped where the stock contacts the receiver. Also there is a small triangle with the letter I in the middle stamped over the special stamp. Any thoughts on this. This gun was made in 1914 and appears origional. This is a round barrel rifle with nice but relatively plain straight grip stock and no other special treatment that I can see.

I havent seen the word “Special” stamped on the butt end of the wood but the triangle with letter in the center sounds like an inspectors mark on the wood.  I have seen that before–if I remember right it was on the buttstock end where it meets the receiver and I also think I have seen it on the butt end of the forearm.  Is the word “special” marked on the receiver or the forend wood?   Not sure what the “special” wold mean.  A lot of times on 1/2 magazine configurations will have the “1/2 MAG” stamped on the butt end of the forearm wood.

For end wood, apparently done with a stamp in the location you described.Rifle is 32-20,receiver and forend cap are blued rather than case hardened ,magazine is full length.

As a WACA Guest I dont think you can post pictures.  Id like to see what the stamping looks like.  If you like you can email a picture of the rifle and the forearm wood with the stamp and I will post to the site.      [email protected]

Thanks Henry for the pic of the buttstock end.  If you can, send another photo at a different angle and lighting–may help see the stamp better.  Also maybe a pic of the buttstock attached to the rifle.  Maybe the length of pull or drop is non-standard??  Is the rifle in a letterable range?  If so, maybe the letter would specify some special feature.

I can make out parts of the stamp but in the middle it is less clear.

I had same thought on letter ,also will go over measurements when reassembled.Right now am refinishing stock (someone slathered Truoil over origional finish).Using Jim Chambers oil finish ;this takes awhile in winter,at least in my hands. That is about how clear the special stamp is,took some time in hand to perceive it especially with the other stamp over it.
