Mike,
The 40-70 Sharps Straight cartridge was highly regarded, and when Winchester began production of the Single Shot rifle, the 45-70 Government and the 40-70 Sharps Straight cartridges were two of the more popular center fire cartridges manufactured in the early years.

As a Lifetime member of OGCA, I also miss Ray, as we all called him.
Rick you are correct in your post, as I still have his booklet that he had printed from several of his nice Winchester single shot rifles. I really enjoyed talking with him years ago, as he truly was a gentleman, and I did learn from him. Pretty sure his photoed booklet was from a display that he set up at an NRA, National meeting, after setting up at the OGCA, display meeting in the spring, years ago.
Tim, I’m also glad to hear that you also knew Ray, as he would sometimes have his grand kids on his knee, sitting at his display.
Bert, I also didn’t realize that information, as far as those preferred and more popular cartridges of the time.
Anthony
I might add he also collected various tang sights. I availed myself of a few after he was over being President of OGCA. Last time I tried to call it did not go well. I have my own issues and no longer can tell exactly what was off, but seems his wife had to talk to me. Pity. He gave of himself and his knowledge! Tim
