Pre-’64 Winchester Model 70 .300 H&H Review
From just published Web available article in “Shooting times”.
https://www.shootingtimes.com/editorial/pre-64-winchester-model-70-300-hh-review/370864
Following quoted:
“History was made when Winchester introduced the classic Model 70 bolt-action repeater in 1934.
Winchester was the first company to introduce a Mauser-type bolt-action rifle engineered specifically for the commercial market, initially as the Model 54 in 1925. Nine years later, a refined version with a much better trigger design was introduced as the Model 70, and history was made.”

Seeming agreed that the Savage Model 20 bolt action rifle (250/3000 & 300 Savage), was generally the first such “commercial model”. Arguably Charles Newton even prior with his fantastic bolt action design, ‘lightly marketed’ prior to Bankruptcy. When you can fact check at Wikipedia for more extensive and accurate info, to say at least, “inquiry notice” regarding any perceived discrepancy! Pretty slapstick journalism.
Just my take!
John
