I got this rifle several months ago and found a vintage scope to put on it to keep it period correct. I sighted it in and put it in the safe. I have never been comfortable with these scopes and bases, where they are externally adjusted and held together with springs. I am headed out hunting this fall and figured I might as well shoot this gun, so I took it to the range to check it. One shot was all I needed…
Yup, don’t mess with it, although you may want to throw a couple more rounds downrange to validate that “group”.

Your scope and mounts are Bausch&Lomb–I’ve used B&L scopes on Pre-64 Model 70s since I bought my first ones in 1963. My favorite scope is the 2.5-8X variable in the original style (there was a second style). You have the “plunger” style rings. I prefer the “clamp” rings with a long spring and star nut. Both styles work well and are super sturdy. Nothing wrong with using these vintage scopes and mounts today despite the availability of more “modern” equipment.
Your scope fits beautifully on your rifle, mounted low but able to clear the bolt handle. Lots of Pre-War 70s have ground bolt handles–it’s a rear shame to alter those elegant handles.
For those with factory original Pre-War 70s with undrilled rear bridges, B&L made a rear mount the used the receiver sight holes and went up over the top of the bridge. These are a little hard to find but they are available.
Plus, there are the Stith mounts that also use the receiver sight holes. Some use the rear sight dovetail. I have some old Stith mounts for Pre-War 70s that I’d part with. They work on Post-War 70s too. Send me a Private Message if interested.
