OfflineGeorge,
The correct date of manufacture is February 1899. If you want the precise date that it was manufactured and received in the warehouse, and the original as built configuration, you can (for a modest fee) obtain a factory letter for it from the Cody Firearms Museum records office.

Bert,
Thank you. That answers my question, and helps out a lot. Sadly, it’s been reblued, but a nice job. I will check on contacting the museum.
Thanks again,
George

I just purchased my 1st Winchester 1892 rifle in 32-20, 24 inch round barrel. I am confused with trying to date it. I get anything from 1895 to 1899. Any help will be appreciated. Serial number is 105157 (although when you look at it, it looks like L05157).
Thanks,
George
Happy New Year George,
I saw SN 105158 for sale at Cabela’s back in 2015. It is the identical configurations as your rifle. Can I get a series of images of your rifle that include the areas of stamped writing and the SN? That way I can add it into my research survey of the Model 1892’s. I have included an image of the SN on 105158 so that you can see the comparison of the “1” digits in it.

Michael,
Yes, I will do that as soon as I can. I am having the extractor worked on, so as soon as the gunsmith finishes it. I will post the photos.
