I HAVE A 38-40 OCTAGON BARELL MY DAD PURCHASED IN THE 1930’S USED IT HAS MARCH 26, 1856 TO OCTOBER 18, 1860 ON THE BAREL. IT HAS THE 38 CAL MARKING AND 1873 ON IT, BUT NO SERIAL NO. I CAN FIND ANYWHERE. EVERYTHING ELSE LOOKS ORIGINAL. ANY IDEAS

The serial number will be on the lower tang just ahead of the stock screw. Here is a picture of where it is.
